Is Divorce the Right Option for Me?

On behalf of The Berger Firm July 7, 2019

While all marriages encounter issues from time to time, in some cases problems might seem insurmountable. This often leads one or both spouses to consider divorce, especially when plagued by the same issues over and over again. If you’re concerned your marriage might be in trouble, Reader’s Digest recommends looking for the following signs.

Lack of Intimacy

Physical and emotional intimacy are the hallmarks of a healthy relationship. When either is lacking in a relationship, it usually indicates there is a serious problem. While it’s definitely true that affections can fluctuate throughout a marriage, a consistent lack of intimacy might indicate that one or both parties have all but checked out of the relationship. It may also indicate that one spouse is having an affair, which is another serious issue.

Continuous Infidelity

While it largely depends on the couple, infidelity doesn’t always mean the end of a marriage. If both spouses are willing to work through issues, along with the help of a relationship counselor, there is a possibility that a marriage can be mended. This is not the case when infidelity occurs repeatedly. The constant cycle of broken trust only increases issues and makes it impossible to find solid footing for the marriage.

Lack of Effort

It might sound like a cliche, but it’s definitely true; all marriages take work. The best marriages involve both parties putting in equal effort to fix problems and create a stronger union. If you’re not concerned with fixing problems, it’s a very bad sign. It’s especially concerning when both spouses lack the motivation to address recurring issues. In this case, you might consider speaking with a divorce attorney to determine your options when it comes to dissolving your marriage.
